Soundproof Recording Studio

If you are looking to construct a soundproof recording studio that is large enough for a full sized band or perhaps even a church choir to record in, then you know the "Room within a Room" method practiced for many home recording studios is not practical. You may be planning to construct a new addition to your home or possibly even a separate structure. If you are taking this route, then the simple method of "boxing sound in" may be a better alternative.

In case you didn't already know, egg crate foam does absolutely nothing for a soundproof recording studio. This fact is also true for putting carpet on the walls. As a matter of fact, egg crate foam and carpet will only affect the acoustics inside your room and are often the worst treatments you can make to a room. Do not confuse soundproofing and acoustics, they are two entirely different things and have extremely little to do with one another.

One method is to just pour 18" of concrete on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Make sure the room is completely surrounded with very thick concrete and sound will have a hard time getting out. Of course, this will be very expensive, and possibly is not the best option if you are building a soundproof recording studio big enough to hold a school dance or gymnastics in! If you have a leak, you are done! If there is a place where sound can get out, it will. It is similar to winterizing a home with insulation. One little hole will allow a lot of sound or cold air through!

Another option some people have had great results with is simply adding mass to their soundproof recording studio. So by adding a second or even third layer of drywall for example, it is possible that you will reduce the amount of acoustical energy leaving the room. Obviously, this is cheaper and a little more practical than pouring enough concrete to stop a nuclear blast. However, if you have always wanted to build a 1950's style bomb shelter, by all means pour to your heart's content.

A soundproof recording studio will provide many benefits aside from preventing your neighbors from forming a mob to lynch you. For example, your studio will be isolated from all sound except what is coming in from the microphone. This is a great way to hear your recording as it will be heard by the masses.
